St Michael’s RC Comprehensive School

Billingham

Client – Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle

Architect – Darbyshire Architects

Completion – October 2010

Value - £220,000

Having carried out a series of projects at the school we were asked to tender for and were awarded a contract to extend and remodel the main entrance and admin area for the school. The work mainly consisted of alterations and the construction of an infill extension at the main entrance, but also included some remodelling to other areas including teaching facilities

The work was fairly central to the school and surrounded on three sides by other school buildings. One of the main thoroughfares for the pupils and staff also ran through the middle of the working area, which had to be maintained during the works to enable pupils and staff to circulate around the school. Planning & segregation was critical to ensure the safety of the pupils and staff, and to ensure that the teaching was not affected by noise, dust, etc. Works were also planned out of hours, i.e. at weekend and night to ensure minimal disruption, these works included electrical shut downs and reconfiguration of the schools data cabling. The work involved the demolition of parts of the existing structure to accommodate the new extension and the removal of asbestos materials in the work areas and service routes. Both of these operations had to be planned, managed and organised to ensure the health and safety of the staff, pupils, workers and general public.

The works were completed within the designated time period, to a high standard, within budget, to the satisfaction of and minimal disruption to the school and without any safety incidents.
